El Salvador, formally known as the Republic of El Salvador, is a Central American country. It is bordered to the northeast by Honduras, northwest by Guatemala, and south by the Pacific Ocean. The country's population is expected to be 6.5 million in 2023. The country has been a mix of descendants of European invaders and local people since its independence on September 15, 1821. Agriculture employs over 25% of the country's labor force and provides approximately 70% of the country's food needs. Coffee and sugar are the most popular agricultural exports. The country was formerly referred to as the "Republic of Salvador." However, in 1915, the Legislative Assembly passed a law stating that the country's name should be rendered as the definite form "El Salvador" " the Saviour, a reference to Jesus, rather than Salvador.
